If You Only Knew: A Social Worker’s Perspective on Dementia Care

Ellen Dunn Mouton, LMSW – Program Director, Alzheimer’s Services

Step into the world of dementia care through the lens of a social worker. Drawing from firsthand experience and professional insight, participants will gain a deeper understanding of dementia — what people wish others understood and the impact on families. Whether you’re a professional, caregiver, or community member, this session offers meaningful takeaways to help build empathy and improve care.

Ellen Dunn Mouton, LMSW, is the Program Director at Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area. She holds a Master of Social Work and a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology from Louisiana State University. Ellen began with the organization as a graduate intern in 2017, joined the staff in 2019, and was promoted to Program Director in 2022. In her role, she oversees the planning, coordination, and delivery of educational and support programs for individuals living with dementia, their families, and professionals.

Ellen is a certified trainer in Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care and co-chairs the Louisiana Department of Health’s Well-Ahead Task Group’s Educate and Empower Committee. She is passionate about developing meaningful, person-centered programs that respond to evolving community needs. Originally from Gonzales, Louisiana—where she now lives with her husband and their dog, Jackson—Ellen is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by dementia.
