JAN M. HONDZINSKI, PHD
Motor Behavior Area Coordinator, Department of Kinesiology, Louisiana State University
As a professor and the Motor Behavior Area Coordinator in the Department of Kinesiology at Louisiana State University (LSU), Hondzinski’s research interests involve the study of motor control and sensorimotor integration with an emphasis on tasks requiring whole-body movements. Results from her studies show how movement control depends on where we look (gaze direction), how we sense and use external visual cues and internal body sensations, and what state of fatigue or neural decline we experience and contribute to the basic understanding of sensory alterations on movement control. Such information is used to improve training regimes or expand rehabilitation strategies for control of movement and functional gait and balance in individuals with deficits due to normal aging or neural pathology. Current funds from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke/National Institutes of Health support a multi-site collaborative clinical trial to assess whether high intensity endurance exercise should be the first-line therapy for newly diagnosed people with Parkinson’s disease.
