Who are we?
Dr. Robert L. Newton, Jr. is an Associate Professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center (Pennington Biomedical) and Director of the Physical Activity and Ethnic Minority Health Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Florida in 2002 and has been at Pennington Biomedical for 19 years.
Dr. Owen Carmichael is a Professor and Director of Biomedical Imaging at Pennington Biomedical. He received his PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Melon University in 2003 and has been at Pennington Biomedical for the last 6 years.
What do we do?
Dr. Newton conducts research designed to reduce health disparities in African Americans using community-based methods. Dr. Carmichael develops brain imaging techniques and uses them to investigate how the brain changes with aging.
Together, we are conducting physical activity promotion programs for older African American adults. Our goal is to use these research studies to provide the evidence base needed to improve cognitive health in older African American adults.
